Strength Tuesday 2/5/13 (w/ Bonus Bear)

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon. Grin Grimace and Bear It Not this bear: Or this bear: Or this bear: Nope. I mean a bear like this: I mean the deadly Bear Complex. In case you’re not familiar, it’s a... read more

Still Hate You, Thrusters

Given that thrusters are a mashup of two of my favorite movements – front squat and push press – I should really like them. But, it’s not to be. I’ve made it clear plenty of times before that I have no love for thrusters. I’ve tried to feel compassion for the oft-hated thruster, but to no avail. They remain dead to me… even when I enjoy a big thruster triumph like this one. But... read more

Suck It, Thrusters. New PR!

As I’ve said many times, I have no love for thrusters. I do, however, have a thing for sprint-y workouts going on right now, and I was eager to jump into the WOD this morning…  despite a terrible night of tossing and turning on my busted-ass shoulder. Happily, doing stuff straight overhead doesn’t irritate my slanty-in-the-socket humerus; it was so ON. Skill build to a heavy 2 reps of... read more

Fran = Lame | Clean = Awesome

Last night, I woke up to visit the bathroom around 12:30 a.m., and as I staggered back to bed, trying to keep my eyes closed, chanting to myself, You’re still asleep. You’re not awake. Don’t wake up. You’re still asleep, Dave held out his iPhone and said, “Our workout tomorrow is Fran.” For the next five hours, I dreamt of that witch composed of thrusters, pullups, and... read more

Again With The Thrusters

As part of my mission to become the Best Version of Me, I signed up for CrossFit Austin’s Circle of Awesomeness Challenge. They seem to be keeping some of the details under wraps, but so far, it looks like we earn points with workouts and other good behavior: Complete special Challenge workouts 1/12 Anaerobic Test1/15 Strength and Strength Endurance Tests1/17 Strength and Strength Endurance Tests1/20... read more

Thrust This

Last Wednesday, I told y’all how I kinda cheated myself out of a 65# thruster – and I vowed that next time, I wouldn’t let my preconceived notions of what I can do get in my way. This morning, I had to walk the walk… or, more accurately, thrust the thruster. This was the WOD on the whiteboard today: 5 rounds:5 thrusters10 unbroken burpees100m sprint:30 rest Coach Tristy said to start at... read more

On Not Underestimating Oneself

I simultaneously had a great workout and a lame workout this morning. I sort of underestimated myself and cheated myself, albeit unintentionally. But like a cast-iron skillet to the back of the head, it caught my attention and makes me wonder: how often am I doing that? And how can I make sure I don’t do it again? So let me tell you all about it… This was our workout today. WOD7 rounds::20... read more

Thrusters Need Love, Too

In the middle of a casual conversation yesterday, a friend said something that stopped me cold. I was blah-blah-blabbing as usual, amusing myself with witty banter about a celebrity train wreck. “That guy is a dirtbag,” I said. Note that I neither actually know “that guy,” nor do I know anyone who knows that guy. “Is he really a dirtbag?” my friend said. I... read more

I Am Eeyore

And now, a re-enactment of my internal monologue at 6:15 a.m. today: “Oh, bother. I forgot to take my Synthroid… now I can’t eat breakfast until an hour after my workout. Oh, dear. I hope my sneakers and sweatshirt are still at the gym… I can’t believe I forgot my shoes AND my jacket there yesterday. [sigh] It’s raining. We’re going to have to run in the... read more

Fran Punched Me In The Nose

[image from The Hopper Deck] Full disclosure: Before today, I’d never done Fran. I know! The answer to “What’s your Fran time?” is a CrossFit staple. But for a variety of reasons, I always missed it when Fran was on the whiteboard for class. And since it includes two of my least favorite movements – thrusters and pullups – I’ve never tackled it on my own. It’s WAY... read more

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

And to take the Chicago song to its lyrical conclusion: Does anybody really care? Well, yes. Yes, I do care. Because I want to get myself to my CrossFit class. Follow-up question:If a hypothetical CrossFit girl wants to wake up at five minutes to six in the morning, what time should she set the alarm on her digital alarm clock? a) 6:05 a.m.b) 5:55 a.m.c) 6:55 a.m.d) 5:06 a.m. If you answered b) 5:55…... read more
