Strength Monday 12/3/12

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon. Reggae and Deadlifts and Burpees, Oh My! The music at the craptastic is generally… well, crappy. Whomever happens to be the bored front desk clerk at the time plugs in their mp3... read more

Burpee Legs, Baby

Saturday morning, I woke up in just enough time to squeeze in a little Backyard Workout before heading off to Hatha Star yoga. Even though I haven’t done CrossFit regularly since last November (!), I’ve started secretly stalking the CrossFit Austin web site again to read their WODs and imagine myself doing them. It’s kind of like flipping through non-paleo cookbooks just to daydream about... read more

Tuesday 10: Badass Burpee Variations

10 Badass Burpee Variations Burpees seem to be everyone’s favorite love-to-hate exercise, so I thought it would be fun to share the burpee variations I’ve collected since I was introduced to burpees at my CrossFit bootcamp back in 2008. (I collect three things: healthy recipes (or unhealthy ones I can paleoize), copies of Jane Eyre, and workouts. In their ways, all three of them are... read more

72 Burpees. 2 Major Complaints.

I almost didn’t do it, so comfortable was I in my leopard pajamas and furry slippers, reading the thoroughly delightful cookbook Bought, Borrowed, Stolen, with Smudge in my lap and a cup of Honeybush Hazelnut tea in my hand. But then I thought of all of you. Bugger! The first 20 burpees felt just fine, thank you very much. I actually felt-thought, Wheeee! This is fun. I’m flying. The... read more

Yay, Burpees!

I (box) jumped back into the fray this week, after taking a break from intense workouts as part of my Healing Experiment. In addition to my yoga classes, I hit the craptastic gym twice for strength training and two mini metcons that involved box jumps, kettlebell swings, cleans, lunges with a plate overhead, and jump rope. It was exhilarating to work up a serious sweat. My new Saturday morning plan... read more

Deserted By Double-Unders + Bonus Barbell Dump

I went to bed at 8:00 p.m. last night. I’m like a toddler with a bedtime, crawling between the sheets while it’s still light outside! It was lovely, truth be told – and I got a glorious nine hours of sleep… which, oddly, didn’t make the alarm seem any friendlier at 5:53 a.m. I was even less excited when I saw the workout because I thought, That looks dumb. What I should have... read more

40-Minute Friday

For the last few weeks, our Friday morning workouts at CrossFit Austin have been Monsters of Cardio. There’s been lots of running, interspersed with stuff like burpees and pullups and double-unders and such. The running distances have been longer than usual – 800s or “run for 5:00, 4 rounds” – and the cutoff times for the workouts have been at 40 minutes – twice as long as... read more

Again With The Barbie Arms

Once again, I wish I had removable arms, like Barbie. My triceps and deltoids are so tired, they’re tingling even as I type. This workout didn’t look like it was going to smoke me like a pork shoulder, but it did. And I’m glad! Burpee + Box Jumps = Happiness (And Agony)

Full disclosure: Again this morning, I very seriously considered turning off the alarm and going back to sleep. But here’s the thing: I think I just start slower in the morning now. Back in the day, pre-Frankenneck, I woke up like this: Now I wake up like this: As long as I get my butt out of bed, it doesn’t matter what’s going on in the noggin, so I’ve decided that from now on,... read more

Yay, Burpees! (And Ring Pushups)

I slept lousy last night. I watched the first 5-10 minutes of three episodes of Knight Rider, so that should give you some indication of what it was like. Snooze –> wake up  with a start –> remove eye mask –> turn on Knight Rider –> drift off –> repeat (I know what you’re asking yourself: “Why on Earth is Mel watching Knight Rider?”... read more
