Rants & Raves – 07/28/12

Oh, the webbernet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Welcome to this week’s collection of Rants & Raves!

Rants

I just didn’t feel like being cranky this week. I was excited about the Olympics, and we launched the Whole30 Daily. I only have one lame-o thing to share. And it’s pretty lame.

First, the man-cave, now this.
A grocery store in Manhattan has created a “man aisle” stocked with “barbecue needs, hot sauces, beer, cereal, soda, beef jerky, condiments and chips.” What are they trying to do, kill off the male population of the neighborhood with processed-food poisons?! And don’t even get me started on the ridiculously sexist ideas that there are “man foods” and “girl foods.” Everyone in the house who loves a big steak say, “Hell, yeah!” [Hell, yeah!]

Raves

Happy news, please.

Badass advice from a professional badass.
I’ve written about Henry Rollins punk-rockitude before, and this piece is a reminder of the fine brain inside his well-muscled, band-fronting physique. This video interview and accompanying article are a nice reminder to “… accept the uncertainty, pick a direction, and charge full steam ahead.” The video is ridiculously, awesomely fun and inspiring — and he’s a great storyteller. Invest seven minutes in your own badassery and give it a watch.

More than breath of fire.

No one is more surprised than I to find myself so enamored of kundalini yoga. This article from Breaking Muscle explains some of the non-groovy benefits of my favorite yoga practice from a new research study. “The goal of the study was to determine if meditation might alter the activity of inflammatory and antiviral proteins that shape immune cell gene expression… Our analysis showed a reduced activity of those proteins linked directly to increased inflammation.”

I Can Bench Press Three Hippos

Big thanks to Mecha for sharing this adorable image with me. Available as a poster from Etsy.

Don’t tell me there’s nothing to eat…

Are your favorites on this list of 319 paleo foods? I love the inclusion of “sea vegetables.” I always forget about Nori, and it’s so good!

Markets Around the World

Feast your eyes on this photo gallery of 15 fresh food markets from around the world. One of our favorite days in Paris last fall was when we wandered around the market in our neighborhood. We sampled freshly-fried African treats, an array of rainbow-colored dried fruits, a bunch of photo-perfect grapes, and samples of stink-tastic cheeses. Here are a few of my snaps from our morning meander through the Parisian market:

African treats cooked right there in front of our eyes.

The beautiful, fresh produce.

Jewel-toned candied and dried fruit.

It’s kind of like the paleo Julie & Julia…
I’m so flattered and delighted to share this with you. Jennie of Easy Paleo has been doing a Whole30 and as part of her 30 days, she decided to cook every recipe in Well Fed. This post is chock full of photos and her thoughts on each of the recipes. Dig in!

Olympics Links

As I collected links throughout the week, I realized I was really going overboard. But it’s the OLYMPICS! I have the fever!

I think as long as you kill off the right part of the population that may not be such a bad thing….. I like the saying I read one time – I’m not saying we should kill everyone, just take the safety labels off and let nature run its course…..

  7. AustinGirl says:

Dear lord. Henry Rollins. The man brings literally DECADES of hotness to the table. Rawr!!

  8. Amy says:

Your rave about Henry Rollins reminds of a picture that always makes me chuckle:
