Oh, the webbernet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Beautiful people, welcome to this week’s collection of Rants & Raves.

MUST READ: Sugar is making us fat.
If you’re up on your paleo what-what and read paleo blogs, this statement won’t be surprising: “Why are we so fat? We have not become greedier as a race. We are not, contrary to popular wisdom, less active… But something has changed: and that something is very simple. It’s the food we eat. More specifically, the sheer amount of sugar in that food, sugar we’re often unaware of.” Read this article anyway. It weaves a sobering story of how this all happened.
This is particularly tasty: “If it could be proved that at that some point the food industry became aware of the long-term, detrimental effects their products were having on the public, and continued to develop and sell them, the scandal would rival that of what happened to the tobacco industry.”
While we’re naming names, let’s talk about wheat.
I’m more Jon Stewart than Bill O’Reilly, but I was glad to see this quote from the host of the O’Reilly Factor about his recent weight loss: “[M]y cholesterol has dropped, my allergies have left, my waist size is down two inches, just for giving up wheat… If the government would tell people, you might not want to eat all of this wheat, because it is blowing you up.” Sadly, the article also includes this bit of wisdom from a dietician: “”There is no scientific evidence to back up that gluten is toxic to anyone who does not have celiac disease, which only affects about 1 percent of the population.”
Sundaes and Pizza and Slurpees… Oh, My
Let’s just go with headlines here: Burger King is serving a bacon sundae this summer. (And while I’m turning up my nose at their poisonous concoction, it does inspire me to come up with a paleo-friendly, healthier version to share this summer. More on that when it happens. Promise.) This exists: a pizza vending machine that makes pizza to order. (Thanks to TCMTG reader Samantha for passing along the link!) 7-Eleven is downsizing its Slurpee from 64 ounces to a mere 50. But not because of health concerns: “It’s because no one could fit the massive drinks into their car’s cup holders.” FYI… 50 ounces is 156% of the average person’s stomach capacity.
How dare they do this to my Jane?!
Long-time readers know that Jane Eyre is my favorite book, so you can probably imagine my reaction to the upcoming besmirching of my Jane. (No) Thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey (have not read it; will not read it), an “erotic retelling” of Jane Eyre is coming this summer. I agree with the book’s publisher that the original is “full of sexual tension,” but that’s why it’s so good. Anticipation, restraint. But yeah, I’ll probably read Jane Eyre Laid Bare. How could I not?!
Let’s try to get over that Jane Eyre thing with some good stuff, shall we?

A few weeks ago, I allowed myself to be lured around the internet wonderland and fell down a rabbit hole to the blog eggton: salty wit and a sweet tooth. I’m enjoying it immensely and thought you might like it, too. Like this post about a lifelong quest for a baby sheep — or this one that I’m not going to ruin by telling you what it’s about. Martha Payne, a 9-year-old living in Argyll, Scotland started a blog called Never Seconds with her dad to rate her school lunches according to mouthfuls, healthfulness, and (ew!) pieces of hair . She did such a good job, she received a supportive tweet from Jamie Oliver himself: “Shocking but inspirational blog,” tweeted the Naked Chef. “Keep going, Big love from Jamie x.”
But then they changed their minds. YAY! As of Friday, Martha is back in blogging business. And despite offers from Hollywood (which she turned down), she’s teaming up with a celebrity chef to try to get healthier meals at her school. Read all about it.
