Jane Eyre… TONIGHT!

My preference for Jane Eyre over any other story on the planet is well-documented (here and here and  here). I recently finished another re-read of the novel, watched the Orson Welles version of the movie on the couch with Smudge, and over the course of a few days on the bus, re-watched the Masterpiece Theater version on my iPhone.

Last weekend, I bought another used copy of the book to add to my collection: an adorable little hardcover – maybe 5″ X 3″ – with extra-thin crinkly pages and a woodcut of Thornfield in flames on the dust jacket. Irresistible!

All of this was done with purpose to get me ready for the new film version that opened in more fortunate cities two weeks ago. I’ve been reading the reviews on Bronte Blog and can say that I’m 100% ready to be swept away by the bleak moors and Jane’s quiet strength.

And here’s the really exciting thing: I’m going to an advance screening tonight of the new film version, courtesy of the movie site GordonandtheWhale. I actually won an online contest… unbelievable!

If you want to catch Jane fever, too, visit the Focus Features Jane Eyre site for a list of theaters showing the movie, along with lots of behind-the-scenes video and interiews.

Have you read this yet? I teach 8th grade and bought it for my students but I want to read it first.

    Love your blog!

I did read it! My husband got it for me for Christmas. Things I liked about it: it was fun to see the story updated with modern touches while still remaining true to the plot points of the original… the writing it pretty good…

I have no actual complaints — it's not a GREAT book, but it was an amusing way to kill some time. Better than watching TV, and far better than some of the other adaptations I've tried to read.
