Workout FAIL

What’s that they say about the best laid schemes of mice and men? Imagine the scene: I’m parked at the hotel room desk, updating my blog, reading email, waking up… usual morning stuff. In my peripheral vision, I can see Dave putting on his running clothes. “Are these my shorts?” he said. I looked up to see him stuffed in black shorts with the trademark Adidas triple white... read more

Butterfly Wings and Ripples in the Pond

Be sure to stop by Maggie’s blog today and read her post about why she CrossFits. At the center of your being: Ripples read more

Penzeys Pilgrimage

I have a cabinet shelf that’s completely obscured by stacked and precariously balanced jars, bags, and envelopes of whole spices, ground spices, dried herbs, and magical spice blends, almost all of which are from Penzeys Spices. And several of my previous blog posts are practically love letters to Penzeys… they even inspired the Run for the Peanut Butter Bars last August! (This year, the Run... read more

AMRAP in Reverchon Park

When Dave and I went to Dallas to see Gavin Degraw last year, we ran on the Turtle Creek Trail and explored Reverchon Park, then rewarded ourselves with breakfast at Cafe Brazil. It was so much fun, we’re doing a total rewind tomorrow – but this time, Dave’s tackling the stairs, too, in an AMRAP CrossFit workout that’s sure to earn us a big ol’ breakfast. Reverchon Park... read more

Punk Rock @ Heart

With apologies to Mike Ness, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer (RIP), Jim Lauderdale, The Ramones, Hank Williams, Kid Rock, David Humphreys, and other songwriters I love to distraction… I’m going to the American Idol concert in Dallas tonight. Feel free to mock in the comments, but before you do, read my rationale. Why I Can’t Help Loving American Idol1. The earnestnessMock all you like,... read more

Why Do You CrossFit?

It cracks me up (in an internal, snarky, unkind way that I should really work on eliminating, but f*ck it, I’m not gonna…) when people learn about the way I eat and the way I workout and ask, “What are you training for?” Um… life. I’m training for life. Yes, the Moonlight Margarita Run and 3M Half Marathon and Austin Half Marathon and The 21st Annual Bataan Memorial... read more

Sunshine Sauce

I needed a rest day, so lucky you… you get a new recipe! In the Paleo world, peanuts are a big no-no. (Because they’re legumes, not nuts, and blah blah blah. Get the full explanation from Whole9 here.) It didn’t seem like a big deal to me to give up peanuts until I remembered the decadent deliciousness that is peanut sauce. Veggies dipped in peanut sauce. Grilled chicken satay dipped in... read more

Cheating At Solitaire

There’s been a lot of talking and thinking about the concept of “cheating” in my life lately. Over at Urban Gets Diesel, there’s a lively debate in the comments about what constitutes cheating on the 30-day, no-cheat paleo commitment the fabulous Ms. Urban has sponsored. I would assume the title provides a good working definition, i.e., NO cheating. But humans are clever and... read more

Mango & "Cream"… Heaven in a Bowl

+ + Step 1Chop the mango into 1/2-inch pieces. Lovingly place 1/2 cup of the mango in a pretty bowl. Step 2Pour 1/4 cup of coconut milk over the mango. (I used reduced-fat coconut milk ’cause that means I can also eat almonds and avocados and olive oil in the same meal. Multiple healthy fat sources makes for a happy girl. You do what you like.) Step 3Sprinkle a few pinches of unsweetened,... read more

Monday Musing

I have a whopper of a “thinking” post to share with y’all… but the corporate overlords are really cracking the whip today. (The first time I typed that sentence, it came out “crapping the whip” which is both inappropriate and appropriate, if you know what I mean [and I think you do]. Anyway…) I’ve been on a cooking bender lately and really wrestling my eating... read more

Saturday Workout: C F E

I’ve been flirt-stalking CrossFit Endurance workouts since last summer. I visit the site every morning and daydream about a world in which I wake up, do a badass CrossFit workout, eat delicious recovery food, nap the nap of the righteous, then take on a CrossFit Endurance workout (and eat again). Until I can arrange my life that way, I’ll do it this way: Some days, Dave and I take the CFE... read more
