Burpee Box Jumps! OMG!

I’m a big fan of the burpee. I started the 100 burpee challenge last year and made it to day 52 when I decided I’d had enough. During the 52 days in a row that I did the damn things, I went through love, hate, and indifferent phases, but ultimately came down firmly on the side of love (especially after I read the article about how convicts do them in prison to maintain their strength). I also... read more

‘Scuse Me, Miss… Can I Get a Beer Over Here?

At some point last week, I realized that Karaoke Apocalypse was playing two parties around St. Patrick’s Day, and that I didn’t have anything green to wear. Any excuse for a costume, right? I googled “St. Patrick’s Day costume” and found just what I was looking for at When it arrived two days later, Dave said, “It’s really green.” Indeed.It... read more

I AM CROSSFIT Challenge Redux

CrossFit Central posted the results of the I AM CROSSFIT Challenge this morning. I have to give a shout-out to my pal Erika who totally committed to the program and reaped massive rewards. (9 lbs., 11 inches, and 3.3% body fat gone, baby, gone!) CONGRATULATIONS, ERIKA! … and kudos to all of the badass chicks I know who took on the Challenge and killed it. (You can read all about them in this previous... read more

Yesterday: Chump – Today: Champ

So… I never did do the Filthy Fifty yesterday. I kept meaning to, and I kept not feeling like it (which is usually a sign that I’m tired, but I HATE unplanned rest days). I spent the day working from home in my pajamas, then fell asleep around 4:00 like I was drugged: BAM! Hard nap for 90 minutes. When I woke up, it was time to hit the HEB for strawberries, almonds, cabbage, squash, chicken... read more

Red Alert! Zone Emergency!

I’ve been craving Ethiopian cabbage for about a week and a half. Last night, I finally got it together to make some, and then I assembled a delicious lunch: Ethiopian cabbage and sauteed zucchini topped with shrimp and sliced black olives, with almonds and strawberries for dessert. Awesome, right?! This morning, I grabbed my lunch and packed it into my messenger bag, along with yogurt, an apple, and... read more

SXSW Watch 2009: Girls Rock Camp SXSW Day Party

If I’d had an option like Girls Rock Camp Austin when I was a teenager, I might have avoided this shiny pink catastrophe:Far worse than the pastel-hued wardrobe, was my overly-eager-to-please attitude and willingness to let others decide who I was and what I wanted. I loved playing the piano, and I dutifully went to chorus practice and piano recitals. But I really wanted to be a badass musician.... read more

Dude! What Time Is It?!

It’s 7:00 a.m. and my alarm didn’t go off for some inexplicable reason. Which means I slept through both my CrossFit Women class at 6:00 and the 6:30 Bootcamp I could have attended in its place if I’d woken up just a little bit earlier. Not an auspicious start to the day. I intend to do my a Mel-ified Filthy Fifty today as a make-up because I’m not physically or mentally ready for... read more

Swing, Swing!

Listen to “Swing Swing” by The All-American Rejects while I tell you about the workout Dave and I did this morning… (This song always gets stuck in my head when my workout includes lots of dumbbell or kettlebell swings.) Tuesday means a CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance workout in our yard/front street. When the alarm went off, I was extremely reluctant to roll out of bed. I was at band... read more

I Have a Confession to Make: I Love the Dirty Parking Garage

When it rains, Crystal holds our Bootcamp in a parking garage. I know it sounds weird, but I love those dirty, grimy, gray garage workouts. I love running up and down the parking ramps, sprinting the stairs (two at a time!), getting coated in dust, watching the construction workers watch us with mystified expressions on their faces… it feels like romping around a post-apocalyptic playground. I always... read more

The Hero Factory

I tend to think of CrossFit Central as the hero factory. But the transformation from mere mortal to superhero via training and eating right can take a long time. Which is why I love this short-cut! At the Hero Factory, you can create your own superhero and see how it would look on the cover of a comic. Like this: What kind of superhero are you? [Just in case you want more, last summer, Marvel comics... read more
