Check It Off The List

Final Spartan 300 of the summer… done! My time: 19:14 (Whew!)… with 85 -lb. deadlift and 65-lb. floor wipers and all the pushups on my twinkle toes. Today I’m going to revel in being awesome, but then I need to put together a plan for conquering the tall box. Next summer: elite weight and real pullups. Surely I can get there in a year, right? Before I got in the car to make my get-away,... read more

Final Spartan 300 Workout Tomorrow

There’s a lot of trying not to think going on at my house today. Dave’s always admonishing me to “stop thinking so much,” so I’m doing my best to chill out, nap, read my book, and relax. At the beginning of the month, I got myself all worked up before the 300 Workout. Bad idea. I didn’t enjoy the workout as much as previous attempts, and I don’t think I performed... read more

Nine Burpees… Done

They didn’t feel that great. And they weren’t pretty. They did not, for example, look like this: Thanks to the Murph last night, I’m getting acquainted to with some muscles in my back and chest that I’m not sure I’ve met before. Or, in any case, it’s been a long time since we talked. I’m not gonna lie: I’m not looking forward to, like, Day 63 of the 100 Day... read more

Wow. That Was Harder Than I Thought It Would Be.

And I expected the Murph to be pretty hard. Wow. Whew. So… last night around 6:45, Dave and I went to the hike & bike trail so he could run, and I could use the handrail on the walking path near the Botanical Garden for the inverted pullups that I was dreading. I was armed with chalk to keep count of my pullup/pushup/squat reps, but I forgot to measure for an out-and-back run from the Mopac... read more

Why Today Was Lame — And What I’m Gonna Do About It

Reasons Today Was Lame: 1. I skipped Bootcamp because I didn’t get to bed ’til 1:00 a.m. because we were at the Tom Petty show (which, although Tom Petty is immensely talented and I really like his songs, was disappointing because it was way, WAY too jammy). 2. My project at work had a mid-afternoon melt-down which made everyone grouchy and which means we need to have another big team meeting... read more

Weight Watchers is an RPG?!

Dave and I and some of our pals used to have game night every other week. We’d pull some obscure board game from the closet, munch on pretzels, and geek out for a few hours. “Roll to see if I’m drunk” was a favorite (only partially ironic) joke. (For non-geeks out there, in role playing games, a roll of the dice determines a character’s behavior, actions, and their... read more

Seven Burpees

Requirement for Day 7 of the 100 Day Burpee Challenge… done! In the bathroom. In my skinny jeans. And big black boots. And girly sweater. With hair swinging in my face. When I was writing my book (Rollergirl: Totally True Tales From The Track. Do yourself a favor and buy it now… it’s good!), I had no choice but to stick my ass in the chair and type type type. I had a short deadline and a lot... read more

Me and the Murph

I keep meaning to do the “Murph.” It was our solo Spartan workout a few weeks ago, but I never got to it. And now it’s become a monster that I must vanquish. Workout: The MurphFor time: 1 mile Run 100 Pull-ups 200 Push-ups 300 Squats 1 mile Run Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you’ve got a twenty pound vest or... read more

Oh, Nancy!

At CrossFit Women this morning, our assignment was “Nancy.” It’s one of those workouts that has zero “fun” elements. It’s just two humbling exercises, neither of which has the silliness of, say, wall ball nor the glow of accomplishment associated with floor wipers or pullups. It’s a leg-burning to-do list with only two items. A combo plate of pain. Workout: Nancy5... read more

Burpees in my PJs

I came out to my studio to do a little Sunday morning retail therapy. You have to agree that my wardrobe would be shamefully incomplete without this leather vest from Bebe:(I predict that when I wear this, there will be some kind of blouse involved.) … and this plaid pencil skirt from Forever21:While I was completing my morning rounds of blogs and such, I read the reminder at CrossFit Central that... read more
